Some Drivers Have No Clue How to Use Fog Lights in Singapore
A frustrated motorist sounds off on the misuse of fog lights in Singapore.
[Story by guest columnist K.O Ng]
I can't stand drivers who misuse their fog lights in Singapore. These people insist on driving around at night with their fog lights blaring.
Do they think they’re lost in a misty English countryside, or are they just oblivious?
Maybe they feel the need to use every single feature in their car to its fullest. Maybe they want to flaunt their factory-fitted fog lights. Or maybe they just think it looks cool to have four bright lights shining instead of the usual two.
But any driver with basic automotive knowledge (or a seasoned car journalist) can tell you—it’s just ridiculous.
Fog lights are extremely bright and angled downward for a reason.
Anyone who has driven through actual fog understands why—they are meant to prevent light from bouncing back into your eyes, which happens when beams are pointed straight ahead. Without proper fog lights, you’d be driving straight into a glowing cloud with no visibility.
Positioned close to the ground, fog lights illuminate the road rather than the fog itself. Their brightness also ensures that approaching drivers notice your vehicle in low-visibility conditions.
Rear red fog lights (whether a single or a pair) are even brighter than standard tail lights for the same reason.
They can also be useful during the day in extreme conditions, such as heavy downpours that drastically reduce visibility.
However, on Singapore’s well-lit streets, fog lights serve little purpose beyond heavy rain.
They won’t help you spot road signs in advance like regular headlights, which shine further and highlight reflective signs from a distance.
When misused, front fog lights blind oncoming drivers, while rear fog lights irritate those driving behind you.
Drivers, take note—fog lights are a safety feature, not a replacement for headlights.
Use them responsibly and only when necessary to enhance road safety.
