Selling a car in Malaysia can be a straightforward process, but having the right documents is essential to ensure a smooth transaction. Whether you’re looking to sell your car online, trade in a used car, or even scrap your vehicle, these are the documents you need.

1. Original Vehicle Registration Card

This document proves ownership of the car. It contains details about the vehicle, including the make, model, engine number, and chassis number. Buyers will need this for ownership transfer at JPJ (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan).

2. Valid Road Tax

Although not mandatory, having a valid road tax makes your car more attractive to buyers. If your road tax has expired, buyers may negotiate a lower price.

3. Valid Car Insurance Policy

Before transferring ownership, the car must be covered under an active insurance policy. The new owner will need to get their own insurance before the car is officially transferred. You can check and compare insurance Malaysia options through Motorist Malaysia.

4. PUSPAKOM Inspection Report (B5 Report)

Required for private car sales, this report certifies that the vehicle meets safety and legal standards. The seller must book an inspection at a PUSPAKOM center.

5. JPJ Transfer of Ownership Form (JPJ K3)

This form is required to officially transfer ownership to the buyer. Both parties need to sign it, and it must be submitted to JPJ.

6. Settlement Letter (If You Have an Outstanding Loan)

If your car is still under financing, you’ll need a settlement letter from the bank stating the remaining balance. The buyer cannot take full ownership until the loan is fully paid off.

7. Sales Agreement (Optional but Recommended)

A written agreement detailing the sale price, vehicle condition, and terms of payment protects both buyer and seller from disputes.

8. Identification Documents (NRIC or Passport)

Both buyer and seller need to provide identification for verification purposes at JPJ.

9. Scrap Car Documents (If Applicable)

If you are scrapping your car instead of selling it, you will need to submit a deregistration application to JPJ. Scrap car services can help handle the process.
