As indicated earlier this year, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will soon equip its enforcement officers with body cameras. The initial phase will see 100 units deployed, with usage beginning this year, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Strengthening Road Law Enforcement and Integrity

Beyond capturing visual evidence of traffic violations, these body cameras are expected to enhance the integrity of JPJ officers in the field. The move aims to ensure transparency in interactions between officers and road users, The Star reports.

“The use of these body-worn cameras plays a role in strengthening the integrity and accountability of enforcement officers while carrying out enforcement duties,” Loke stated in a written parliamentary reply to Sabri Azit (PN-Jerai).

The recordings will also serve as protection for officers against threats, misinterpretations, and baseless accusations. In cases of disputes, footage can be reviewed to clarify situations accurately.

Trials Completed, Expansion Expected Next Year

JPJ has conducted multiple trials to assess the technical, system, and operational effectiveness of the body cameras. Following successful tests, the department plans a second phase of deployment next year, pending financial approval from the Ministry of Finance.

This initiative mirrors the police force’s (PDRM) adoption of body cameras, with a nationwide rollout of 7,648 units scheduled for completion by March 2024.

How This Affects Malaysian Drivers

With these new body cameras in place, Malaysian drivers should expect stricter enforcement of road laws. Whether you are caught speeding, running a red light, or violating other traffic rules, the footage can serve as concrete evidence. This could lead to fewer disputes over summonses and a fairer traffic enforcement system.
