Malaysians Spent Millions on Special Plates – But It’s Helping the B40!

Ever wondered where all that cash from special car number plates goes? Well, in 2024 alone, the Malaysian government collected a whopping RM45.9 million from the sale of exclusive plate series like ‘GOLD’, ‘FFF’, ‘EV’, ‘PETRA’, and ‘MADANI’. And guess what? This isn’t just about flashy plates, it’s about making life better for the B40 community!

How Fancy Plates Are Changing Lives

When Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin asked about the revenue breakdown, the transport ministry revealed that all proceeds went into the Consolidated Fund under the finance ministry. Half of it, yes, 50%, was directed to the transport ministry to support game-changing initiatives for underprivileged Malaysians.

One standout initiative is MyLesen, a nationwide program launched in May 2023. If you’re from the B40 group or a young driver, you can now get help securing: 

• Motorcycle licences (Class B2, below 250 cc engine capacity)
•  Public service vehicle (PSV) licences for e-hailing and buses 
• Goods driving licences (GDL) for lorries

Free Helmets, Flight Subsidies & More!

But wait, there’s more! The funds have also been used to give out free helmets for adults and kids, ensuring safer rides for everyone. And if you’re a student traveling between Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan, you can enjoy FLYsiswa flight ticket subsidies to ease your travel expenses!

That’s not all. Taxi, rental car, and school bus drivers also got a helping hand. Thanks to the revenue from special plates, particularly the ultra-luxurious ‘GOLD’ series, the government covered the remaining 10% of Socso contributions under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme. This means better financial protection for drivers under the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017. Nice, right?
