According to Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi, the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway widening project is scheduled to commence at the end of February 2025.

Nanta addressed inquiries from Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak) regarding the project's progress and potential impacts on nearby residents. He confirmed that the initiative is in its final stages of appointing a contractor and emphasized that the expansion will occur within the existing highway boundaries, eliminating the need for additional land acquisition.

The minister highlighted that sections of the highway reserve in Selangor fall under the jurisdiction of the state's Department of Director General of Lands and Mines and the Forestry Department. Consultations between the highway concessionaire, AFA Prime Berhad (formerly known as ANIH Berhad), and these departments have revealed that many settlements near the highway are classified as squatter areas, technically encroaching on government-owned land. A survey has been conducted to assess these areas, with findings currently under review to determine necessary actions in accordance with laws and guidelines.

Nanta urged full cooperation from Selangor's state agencies to ensure the project's smooth progression. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan previously stated that the project is expected to be completed by 2029, aiming to ease traffic congestion, particularly during holidays and weekends.

The RM2.1 billion project encompasses a 45.3-kilometer stretch of the highway. Plans include adding an extra lane to the section between the Gombak toll plaza and Genting Sempah, expanding it to four lanes, and widening the segment from Genting Sempah to Bentong from two to three lanes. Additionally, a new two-lane tunnel will be constructed alongside the existing tunnel heading east.

This development follows the federal government's approval in early 2024 to implement the widening project as a long-term measure to reduce traffic congestion in the area.
