According to The Edge, several highway concessionaires are looking to develop their own Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) systems, with PLUS Expressways Berhad being the first to pilot test their prototype this April.

The final specifications of the system are currently unknown, but PLUS holds its advantage with their association with Teras Teknologi Sdn Bhd, which is the current provider of electronic toll collection systems for many highway concessionaires. It’s said that the new gantries for the system will feature RFID technology along with an automated number plate recognition system.

Additionally, PLUS is looking to link its system with JPJ, meaning that drivers with unpaid tolls won’t be able to renew their road taxes.

MLFF systems were originally planned to be implemented in 2025 as stated by the government. However, things seem to be taking a slow start with prototypes rolling out in Q2 2025. Hopefully the testing will go as planned and development speeds up.
