In a surprising turn of events, Toyota and Mazda are potentially co-developing the new generation Supra, according to the latest BestCar magazine from Japan.

The report states that the two Japanese automakers will make a huge announcement this coming spring. It’s currently unknown what exactly will be revealed, but there’s a high possibility that it’s going to be a new Supra.

Previously, the car scoop magazine had stated that the new Supra will be completely built in-house by Toyota, and that the engine would be a turbocharged 4 cylinder hybrid. However, it seems that they’ve received some news from an insider that Toyota is interested in Mazda’s inline 6 cylinder found in the CX-70 and CX-90.

The Supra’s soul comes from the inline 6, and Toyota knows that. This would make perfect sense as the automaker hasn't produced an inline 6 since the 2JZ. Developing a new engine from the ground up is extremely costly, even for an automotive giant like Toyota. Since Mazda is the only Japanese automaker to still produce inline 6 engines, it makes an enticing collaboration between the two automakers compared to the other six cylinders from Stellantis and Germany.

The report also states that Mazda has allegedly sent a large number of engineers to Toyota’s GR department, though no source was cited.

Interestingly, the report states that the two automakers are going to go separate ways in terms of body styling and design language. Toyota will have a 2-door coupe, being the Supra of course, whereas Mazda will produce a 4-door coupe. This breaks the usual convention of platform-sharing between companies, resulting in nearly identical twins such as the 86/BRZ and Z4/Supra.

For Mazda’s side, a four-door sports car would be a perfect fit in their lineup alongside the current MX-5 and the future production version of the Iconic SP concept.

While BestCar’s reports are usually hit or miss, they’ve been the most reliable scoop magazine from Japan, and this time they may truly be on to something. Everything above is pretty solid evidence that Toyota is in talks with Mazda for a new sports car platform. If the collaboration does come into fruition, Toyota will get their new Supra, while Mazda might see a resurgence from it's golden age.

As per usual, leaks and rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, but I’d like to put on my tinfoil hat and speculate all types of specifications for fun. What do you think about this? Are you up for a “Toyozda” sports car? Let us know in the comments.
