Nissan is back on the market after a scrapped merger with Honda to create the world’s third largest automaker. News that would’ve shook the automotive industry had it materialized.

Earlier yesterday, Nissan’s CEO Makoto Uchida had reportedly met with Honda’s Toshihiro Mibe, also CEO, to cut off further discussions on the merger during a meeting, says Reuters citing an anonymous insider.

With the breakup, Nissan is looking for new partners, including technology companies, to improve their stance in the current EV market against auto giants such as China’s BYD and America’s Tesla.

Another insider pointed out that Foxconn was also being considered. Foxconn is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer based in Taiwan, most known for manufacturing Apple and Sharp products. The tech giant had proposed to work with Nissan in the past to expand its EV contract manufacturing business, but was promptly declined by the automaker.

When requested to comment on the situation, both Honda and Nissan declined and said that the final decision is to fall in mid-February. Similarly, Foxconn was also silent when asked about the potential partnership.

Currently, Toyota is Japan’s largest automaker, with Honda in second and Nissan third. Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda was previously asked about a merger with Nissan, but he said the automaker didn’t approach Toyota at all, possibly due to anti-monopoly laws.

It’s unknown if Nissan can repair its sinking ship as their situation is growing dire. Donald Trump’s tariffs will greatly impact their finances from one of their largest markets, and Chinese EV manufacturers are taking a large chunk of their market share pie. The struggling automaker had already announced that 9,000 workers and 20% of their global capacity are being cut.

Will Nissan find a right partner in time, or is this truly the end of Japan’s third largest automaker? Comment your thoughts down below.
