Nissan Is Set To Scrap Talks About Merger With Honda
After yesterday’s board meeting at Nissan, they’ve announced that they’re scrapping talks about their merger with Honda, Nikkei Asia reports.
For some context, Nissan and Honda were in talks of a merger to create a holding company by 2026. The initiative was to cut costs and share technologies within the company to combat against their other rivals such as BYD in China.
Yesterday, Honda gave out an offer to buy shares in Nissan to make them their subsidiary. Honda were increasingly worried about Nissan’s financial situation, leading them to make the move. However, Nissan wasn’t fond of their rival making decisions for their company, as they wanted equal footing in the merger.
Both automakers had originally intended to release details about the merger during the end of January, but have delayed it until mid-February over disagreements. If the merger is materialized, the holding company would’ve been the third largest automaker worldwide.
Although the merger’s fate is uncertain, Reuters cited two sources that imply that the talks may continue despite the difference in opinion.
As reported by Reuters, both Honda and Nissan stated that the Nikkei report wasn’t based off any official statement, and that the final decision will fall in mid-February.
As for the third company in the merger, Mitsubishi Motors, reports were released last month stating that they may step out of the merger. However, they’ve since then refuted the reports as they claim that the reports were not official press releases.
