Following the implementation of a 50% toll discount for Chinese New Year last week, the government has announced that they will no longer offer toll-free travels during festive seasons. Instead, tolls will be discounted by 50%.

Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi states that the initiative will save the government a significant amount of costs. Previously, the government had to shell RM160 million for free tolls annually, the new measure will cut it by half at RM80 million. The minister stated the costs are covered by the government’s public funds, and not the highway concession companies.

The minister added that the discount offer will still be applied on the same 8 days as previously seen.

The 50% toll discount initiative was launched a few days after the consideration to abolish toll-tree travels during festive seasons. In a statement before the initiative’s announcement, Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that free tolls should be given to specific income groups instead of completely removing it.

Datuk Alexander said that the cabinet may review and tweak the decisions as needed.
