Penang KDPN Impounds 27,000 Liters of Diesel Smuggled Diesel
The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living's (KPDN) Penang has raided a warehouse near Sungai Perai in Sungai Lokan, seizing 27,000 liters of subsidized diesel and foiling a large-scale diesel smuggling operation, according to Bernama.
KPDN director S. Jegan states that the raid was a part of Operation Tiris, where it took 2 months to gather intelligence and survey the area before they took action.
“The warehouse, located away from the main road, was likely chosen to avoid detection, with authorities using drones to monitor the area before moving in and arresting four local men,” the director said to Bernama.
In addition to the smuggled diesel, they’ve also found connecting pipelines, documentation on diesel transactions, as well as various equipment that’s valued at RM260,800 in total.
All four men aged 40 to 60 were caught, including 3 lorry drivers and a warehouse caretaker. The case is now being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 (Act 122).
Diesel smuggling is not uncommon in the nation. However, the issue at hand is the smuggling of the fuel to other countries. KDPN minister Armizan Mohd Ali has previously estimated that roughly 3 million gallons of diesel are being smuggled into other nations, resulting in a RM4.5 million loss daily.
