2 Best Car Spotting Places in Kuala Lumpur
When I was still a rookie car enthusiast, I searched for places to spot cool cars in my local area, Kuala Lumpur. Of all the spots I've been to, these are 2 of the best car spotting places in the KL area. It may sound like there isn’t much choice but these two spots are my personal favorite, and where I’m most knowledgeable.
Pavilion KL Area
Let’s start with a popular car spotting area in Malaysia, the Pavilion KL Area. If you’re a local, you’ve already figured out why that is the case. For the travelers coming into Malaysia, Pavilion KL is one of the more luxurious malls people go to, which means you’ll get to see a plethora of incredibly expensive or rare vehicles.
The places I recommend going to most are the parking entrance on Jalan Raja Chulan and in the valet parking area.
The parking entrance area usually has luxury and super/hypercars drive by, where you can feast your eyes and ears on McLarens, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys and even Bugattis if luck is on your side. However, the spot does have some caveats as it’s quite dangerous with hundreds of cars passing by, there’s also the Malaysian heat blasting you down too despite the slight shade given from the building itself.
If you can’t handle that, the valet parking area is probably your best pick. The area is sheltered and there’s always a few expensive machines on “display”. If you’re into automotive photography, this place has good lighting that can result in some immaculate photos, so that’s a bonus. One thing to note is that the place is quite famous, so expect a small crowd in front of these areas.
Once you’re done with your car spotting session, the Pavilion KL mall is a good place to fill your stomach, though keep in mind that the parking fees are quite expensive. (There's an MRT too!)
Bandar Sunway
Commonly known as Malaysia’s tuning heaven, this is the place to be if you’re looking to spot tuner cars of any kind.
Where Pavilion has shiny new super/hypercars, Bandar Sunway has more of an obsession with golden-era JDM and EDM cars. Doesn’t mean that there isn’t any though, you’d still see some modern Porsches and GT-Rs being in shops getting ready for some upgrades, or it’s just the shop owner’s car.
This place is a personal favorite of mine for a multitude of reasons. The first is that there's all kinds of special cars from around the world to seen here. Yes, JDM tuner cars are the district’s forte, but there’s also Beemers, Alfas, and even Ferrari’s at the back of some of these workshops! (I’ve personally seen a Testarossa once!)
The other reason why I love coming here for the occasional spotting session is for the “car rotations”. The district always has different cars coming and going, so the cars you’ve seen this week may be different from the next, making it really refreshing to come back to every week. If you’re living in Malaysia for a while, or already live nearby, go take a look every few weeks and you’ll find that the RX-7 you saw last week is now an NSX instead.
A tip I have for this district is that you should try walking in the lanes behind the workshops, as those are where I saw some of the rarest and coolest cars in person. It’s not guaranteed however, so take your luck and go see what you’ll find at those backlanes! (Just don’t act suspicious or touch any of the cars)
However, unlike Pavilion KL with the slight shade, there's no shelter from the sun here so remember to bring an umbrella and a fan of some sorts to ease the heat.
Once you’re done with your car spotting adventures, there’s a bunch of restaurants for you to choose from the rows and rows of shop lots. If you're wanting aftermarket parts for a project, shops like Kakimotors.com, Rev Performance and Samurai Racing can hook you up with some good prices.
With these two car spotting spots, there’s much to see in Kuala Lumpur that meets the eye for car enthusiasts in Malaysia.
Two spots may not seem like much, but trust me, the sheer variety of cars you can see at both places will make it worthwhile. Whether you're into expensive, high-end performance and luxury cars or souped-up tuner machines, these locations offer something for every kind of petrolhead.
Of course, these two aren’t the only places to see some crazy machines, there’s plenty of hidden gems that only few know of. If any of you know some, do comment down below! Grab your camera, stay hydrated, and happy spotting!
