Yep, you heard that right. While speaking to the media at the 2025 Rolex 24 at Daytona, Honda CEO Koji Watanabe said that they’re considering building a motorsports derived performance trim above the existing Type R and Type S, according to The Drive.

The new high-performance trim, if confirmed, will be built with genuine Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) parts as the American branch has already started to make the necessary parts.

“Today I cannot tell the exact plan yet, but yes, we should create such kind of performance model together with HRC racing technologies. The American side [HRC US] already started developing performance parts.” said Watanabe.

Watanabe’s comment was a response to whether they’ll build extremely high-performance cars for sale similar to how Ferrari has the XX program. Interestingly, The Drive had asked if they were considering platforms such as their IMSA prototypes or RB-17-ish hypercar, but Watanabe clarified that new trim will be based on existing models in Honda and Acura’s (Honda's American luxury brand) lineup.

The CEO continued, stating that the first model would be based on either the Honda Civic Type R or the Acura Integra Type S.

This isn’t the first time Honda had been teasing us for a new performance trim, look no further than last year’s Monterey Car Week, where Americans had the chance to see the unveiling of the Acura Integra Type S HRC Prototype. The car was so good apparently, F1 driver Yuki Tsunoda, who briefly test drove it, called up Honda to have one imported back to Japan for him.

While this good news, what and how can Honda improve upon their already spectacular Civic Type R and Integra Type S? They’ve been nearing the limits of what front-wheel drive can do for some time now, more power and suspension wizardry can’t beat physics. Does this mean we may see an AWD Type R/S for the first time? Add in the aero kit and engineering from the HRC Integra Prototype, and this might be Honda’s spiciest road-legal performance car yet. What are your speculations?
