Mitsubishi May Not Join Honda and Nissan Merger
Mitsubishi Motors Japan may not join the Honda-Nissan merger that was announced last year, according to Reuters.
The Japanese automaker is planning to remain listed while still having a cooperative relationship with both companies, while also focusing on expanding its market share in the ASEAN region.
For some context, Honda and Nissan announced that both companies will merge and form the world’s third largest automaker group, with a promised annual output of 7.4 million vehicles. With Nissan having a 24% stake in Mitsubishi, the three diamonds was expected to give a decision by this month.
The Yomiuri newspaper reported last Friday that Mitsubishi was considering joining the merger. However, due to the company’s relatively small size, they said that the company won’t have much say in the joint venture’s management decisions.
In a statement, Mitsubishi says there have been media reports based on how they intend to participate in the business integration framework with Honda and Nissan, but the reports were not based on information announced by the three diamonds.
The Honda-Nissan merger is set to finish talks around June this year and to be established in August 2026. While Mitsubishi may not be apart of the merger, their focus on the ASEAN region could signify more models incoming in the near future. What do you think?
