Targetted Highway Toll Exemption for B40 and M40 in Discussion, says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has just announced that the government is targeting specific groups for toll exemptions during festive seasons. Specifically, the new approach is in regards to giving toll exemptions to specific groups such as B40 and M40.
According to Anwar, he says that the toll exemptions should only be given out to the aforementioned B40 and M40 income groups instead of benefiting everyone, especially for the wealthy in luxury cars.
“Some have raised the issue of why the toll exemption is for everyone, even [wealthy owners of] luxury cars benefit, so perhaps we should be even more thorough to ensure that the lower-income groups are given special consideration. This is being refined. Works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has only outlined the basic principles, stating that we cannot continue to subsidise everything like electricity and fuel,” the prime minister said.
Earlier this week, there was news of the discontinuation of season toll exemptions. However, it seems the government is backtracking slightly, giving only certain groups a toll-fee-free trip back to their hometowns. Specifics are expected to be revealed soon.
