At Proton’s Chinese New Year dinner that was held this week, the national carmaker announced 3 models are to be released later this year, along with plans to match Perodua’s production numbers by the year 2030.

Let’s start with the most exciting part, which is the new models. Proton hasn’t given any specific names but the codenames are AMA, GMA, and X/S Series. If you’ve been keeping up with the recent leaks from Proton, you’ll know that the AMA is almost certainly the new Saga that was spotted a few days ago. There’s much hype and excitement for the new national hero, but let’s hope this is just a minor facelift and not a completely new generation. Read this article if you want more details!

As for the GMA, Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong said that it could either be the eMas 3 or 5, while confirming that they have plans for releasing both locally. Other than that, there isn’t much information given on the GMA model.

The X/S series is also poised to have at least one additional model to Proton’s lineup. Like the new Saga, the spied images of a camouflaged X50 with some exterior changes also hints that the X/S series will have a facelifted X50. However, they’ve also hinted at a potential addition of a X90 facelift, as it’s currently the oldest model in their lineup. Although there’s an S in the codename, nothing has been said about another S model as of yet.

Other than the models, Proton is also planning to match their archrival, Perodua, in terms of production numbers by 2030. If that stands true, then the national carmaker has much to catch up to. For comparison, Proton has sold 152,352 units in total last year, whereas Perodua has over double the numbers at 358,102 units. Even if it sounds overtly ambitious, Dr Li has vowed that this will be the last year that sales hover around the 150,000 mark.

“By 2030, we want to achieve 330,000 units annual sales. I wish we can achieve this before that,” the CEO said.
