RM806.9 Million in Unpaid JPJ Fines Since 2010 – Restrictions Loom
Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) has reported an alarming RM806.9 million in unpaid fines since 2010. Over six million fines for traffic offences like speeding, running red lights, and breaking traffic laws remain unresolved, according to the New Straits Times.
In 2023 alone, unpaid fines amounted to RM286 million, a staggering jump from RM203 million in 2022 and just RM9 million in 2020. Despite issuing over 26 million fines during this period, only 15 million fines have been settled, generating RM2.3 billion in revenue.
Penalties for Non-Payment
JPJ’s director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, warned of restrictions for motorists with outstanding fines. These include a ban on renewing driving licenses and vehicle road tax. Simply put, ignoring fines could leave your car stranded in the driveway.
Tech to the Rescue
JPJ is stepping up its digital game by enhancing its MyJPJ mobile app. Soon, users will receive notifications about unpaid fines directly on their phones. This proactive approach aims to reduce the growing backlog and improve compliance among motorists.
A Golden Opportunity
Here’s the good news: JPJ is offering a special fine discount. For select offences, you’ll only need to pay RM150 instead of RM300. But don’t sleep on this it’s a one-time offer, and legal action awaits those who fail to comply.
