Remember the Mazda EZ-6 launched in China last November? Well, it's making its way to Europe and the UK under a different name, this is the Mazda 6e, which is the electrified version of the previously dead Mazda 6.

There are two different powertrain options for the new Mazda 6e. The base option aptly named the ‘Mazda 6e’ gets a 68.8kWh battery paired with an electric motor at the rear that outputs 258PS and 320Nm of torque, giving it a 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds and 175km/h top speed. The battery can be charged from 10-80% in just 20 minutes thanks to the 200kW DC charging port, allowing for a decent 479km range.

Then there’s the ‘Mazda 6e Long Range’, with a bigger 80kWh battery that shells out 552km of range. However, buyers have to sacrifice some power as it has a 245PS motor at the rear, although torque remains the same. This slight drop in power results in a slower century sprint at 7.8 seconds, which is just a few finger lengths slower. Interestingly, the DC charging is lower than the base at only 98kW, allowing for 45 minute charge from 10-80%.

For European models, AC charging up to 11kW takes approximately 8 hours for the Mazda 6e base model and up to 9.5 hours for the Long Range version.

Talking about design, the Mazda 6e is identical to the EZ-6. It’s built under the joint venture between Mazda and Changan, and it’s a stunner. The 6e has the Japanese automaker’s ‘Kodo: Sound of Motion’ design language, with rounded body lines and little sharp angles that make it feel sporty yet sleek and elegant.

The illuminated wing and grille, along with the taillight bar, not only look beautiful, but they actually display the remaining battery life by pulsating with lights. Mazda also didn’t skimp out on the sporty details, with an active aero wing that deploys at 90km and can be manually controlled. The 6e also gets 19-inch Y-spoke aluminum wheels on both models.

Inside, buyers get a panoramic sunroof with a floating center console, 64-colour ambient lighting, an augmented reality heads-up display, black or Warm Beige artificial leather upholstery, a 10.4 inch augmented reality digital cluster, 14.6 inch infotainment system, rear passenger display, and a 14-Speaker Sony sound system. The 6e can store 330 liters of space at the rear and 70 in the front, which should be good for daily errands.

Europe will be receiving the 6e later this year whereas the UK will have to wait for 2026. This is good news considering that right-hand drive versions of the 6e are now confirmed, which begs the question of whether Bermaz will consider bringing it to the Malaysian market. Fingers crossed as this could potentially shake up the luxury sedan market, if priced well that is.
