Following yesterday’s suspension of 6 Pustakom staff and 2 runners, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained 13 more Pustakom vehicle inspectors today, racking a total of 22 offenders.

The suspects were aged 20 to 40 and were allegedly receiving bribes from runners on a monthly basis to pass vehicle inspections, receiving a range of RM500 to a whopping RM1,500 per driver.

“The arrest of all the suspects follows the arrests of six vehicle inspectors last Monday and the results of an interrogation conducted by the MACC on an agent handed over by the road transport department (JPJ) previously,” a source was quoted saying.

The MACC continues to be vigilant as chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki states they are intending on investigating other vehicle inspections centers nationwide, and not just KL centers.

“Based on our collaboration with the road transport department (JPJ) and Puspakom, we will look into other inspection centres in the country as well,” Azam said.

“Our goal is to eliminate corruption at the inspection centres Our investigations lead us to believe that the first suspect, who was handed over to us by [the JPJ], is the mastermind of the operations. We do not rule out the possibility that more arrests will be made to facilitate investigations,” he continued.

The 13 vehicle inspectors will be freed on MACC bail but only after they give their statements, according to chief commissioner of operations Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya. He also added that the case was being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009.
