Jalan Bukit Bintang Should Be Pedestrian-Centric, Says Transit Malaysia
It’s been almost a week and half since the plan to pedestrianise Jalan Bukit Bintang has been announced, and it’s been significantly supported by Transit Malaysia, reports Bernama.
The non-governmental organization said in a statement the daily traffic jams on the notorious road are caused by private vehicles parked on the side of a three-lane road, which causes horrendous traffic standstills on all-day long. This includes nights and weekends, where the amount of private vehicles in the city reach its peak.
“By redesigning to accommodate more people travelling to Bukit Bintang by foot or public transportation, Jalan Bukit Bintang will retain its energy, no matter the traffic situation,” the NGO said.
In addition, Transit Malaysia has also put forth some proposals for pedestrianising the area. Firstly, they suggested a redesign of the Jalan Bukit Bintang to Sultan Ismail Intersection by introducing a “scramble crossing” to allow crowds to flow better. Secondly, dedicated bus lanes should be introduced and increase the frequency of buses. Lastly, the proposal pointed out that the larger pedestrian area would be economically beneficial, as the area already has a strong transit network, especially with the elevated walkway to KLCC that connects two popular attractions.
The NGO has also asked Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) to discuss with the stakeholders regarding businesses that involve the use of private vehicles.
For a refresher, authorities are considering closure of a key part in Jalan Bukit Bintang to reduce congestion. Plans are currently being studied and discussed among stakeholders on how feasible it is.
