Transport Minister Anthony Loke has said that the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) is now being changed to a point-to-point system from the previous static method. The new implementation is more accurate when monitoring vehicle speed by calculating the time taken from two points to determine the vehicle’s average speed.

Despite the implementation of AWAS cameras across the country, the transport ministry’s aspirations of lowering vehicle speeds and reducing accidents have been met with unsatisfactory results, and that the cameras are currently ineffective in reducing speeds, according to Loke.

“We don’t want drivers to slow down just in front of the camera, but slow down within a certain distance. Let’s say between point A and point B, we want to know how long the driver takes. If he uses less time than he should, it means he is speeding and will be subject to action,”, he stated.

The new system will be put on trial in high risk areas, such as Kuala Lumpur-Karak Motorway (KLK) in Genting Sempah and the Menora Tunnel in Ipoh, before being implemented nationwide.

Passenger cars aren’t the only ones that to take note, as Loke also announced that a High Speed-Weigh in Motion (HS-WIM) system will be introduced in Q3 2025 to address overweight commercial vehicles. The HS-WIM mechanism will automatically weigh heavy vehicles through sensors embedded on the road. There are 10 identified locations where this system will be installed.
