Authorities are Considering to Close Key Section in Jalan Bukit Bintang to Reduce Traffic Congestion
In order to reduce traffic in the area, authorities are currently considering the closure of a key section in Jalan Bukit Bintang according to New Straits Times.
The consideration of the closure is due to the constant heavy traffic in the area, with it only getting worse during peak hours in addition to the year end holidays. The particular area of interest is the road between Pavilion KL to Jalan Pudu, which is often so congested that cars barely move even during normal hours.
According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, discussions and further studies with stakeholders are currently underway to evaluate the feasibility of redirecting and restricting vehicular traffic in the area.
"By diverting traffic and closing this area to vehicles, we aim to create a pedestrian-friendly zone. With clear communication to the public and stakeholders, I believe this proposal is worth testing," he told Buletin TV3.
The police also plan on integrating more AI-powered Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in Bukit Bintang to effectively monitor the area and enforce traffic laws remotely. Rusdi points out several causes of the congestion involving illegal parking, pedestrian crossing at unauthorised points and taxi/e-hailing vehicles dropping off passengers. Street performers are also a factor as they often attract large crowds.
Authorities have encouraged people to use more public transport such as GoKL to ease congestion within the area.
Currently, weekly integrated traffic operations are conducted in Bukit Bintang to focus on traffic violations and obtrusive vehicles. There have been over 1,500 summonses issued, and 36 vehicles towed since Dec 13, said DBKL.
"These weekly operations are starting to show results, particularly in Bukit Bintang. This is our third week, and we hope more people become aware of the need to follow traffic rules," said Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) head ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa.
