Last Monday, the road transport department (JPJ) launched a special operation named Gempak Teknikal that’s targeted towards commercial and public vehicles. The operation lasted for 5 days and concluded just yesterday, with a total of 5,306 notices issued among the 17,729 vehicles inspected according to Ministry of Transport Secretary-General Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan.

The notices issued involve the detainment of vehicles, inspection orders, and questioning the drivers of the vehicles. Action has been taken towards 1,787 vehicles with 16 seized, 15 of which are commercial vehicles and one being a public service vehicle.

Jana Sathiran stated that the JPJ are not trying to find faults by issuing notices, instead they’re promoting road safety and appropriate road conditions in response to increasing incidents with commercial vehicles.

He added that unsuitable or rethreaded tyres are a reoccurring problem among commercial and public vehicles, emphasising that it was the main focus of the operation to make sure their brakes and tyres are in good condition.

“Vehicles will be stopped from continuing their journey if violations are found. During earlier checks, we observed several vehicles using retreaded tyres with the outer layer nearly peeling off. This could pose a significant danger to road users if these tyres come off while on the road. This is precisely the situation we aim to prevent,” he said.

The JPJ has stepped up enforcement efforts during festive seasons by deploying over 1,500 personnel to address trade-related offences. These include issues such as overloading of vehicles, technical and mechanical problems, documentation issues, and traffic violations.

According to Jana Santhiran, the additional personnel have been strategically stationed on highways, urban roads, and other critical areas to strengthen enforcement and ensure road safety during these busy travel periods.
