JPJ Launches New Op to Target Offending Commercial Vehicles
In response to a series of fatal accidents involving commercial vehicles, the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) has launched 'Gempur Teknikal,' a nationwide operation aimed at identifying, impounding, and potentially forfeiting commercial vehicles that violate the law.
This initiative focuses on enforcing compliance with the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (Act 715), targeting offenses such as overloading, technical faults, improper documentation, traffic violations, and manufacturing defects.
JPJ Director-General Datuk Rospiagos Taha emphasized that there will be no compromise for drivers or owners who fail to adhere to regulations under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Act 1987 (Act 334), and Act 715.
Offenders may face fines ranging from RM1,000 to RM500,000 under Section 57 of Act 715 for failing to prioritize the safety of other road users. Additionally, vehicles can be impounded under Section 80 of the same act, with the possibility of forfeiture.
This crackdown comes in the wake of several tragic incidents, including a recent crash on the North-South Expressway near Ayer Keroh, Melaka, which resulted in seven fatalities. The accident involved a tour bus, two lorries, a car, and a MPV and was reportedly caused by a dislodged tyre from one of the lorries.
Statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) indicate that, on average, three lorries are involved in accidents daily, contributing to 5,364 fatalities in the first ten months of 2024. Major offenses include carrying unsecured or overloaded materials, malfunctioning signals, and faulty brakes.
