Mat Rempits are now finally getting the ban hammer as the Transport Ministry is currently finalising amendments to the Road Transport Act 1977.

Street racing incidents have been an ongoing issue for months now and they’ve been creating chaos for both motorists and officials.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah emphasized that the new amendments will be addressed directly to street racers as well as reckless drivers who endangers other road users.

“The government is studying the need to tighten existing laws to introduce harsher penalties for dangerous and illegal racing.” he told Dewan Rakyat.

Hasbi continued to say that the draft bill for the Road Transport Act has already been sent to the Attorney General’s Chambers. He hopes that the new bill will discourage the act of street racing and reduce the amount of road accidents caused by it.

Hasbi said that the JPJ and police are working together to carry out other methods of enforcement on the matter, such as Op Samseng Jalanan operations, using social media and campaigns.

He also emphasized that the vehicles seized from street racing and extreme modifications will not be returned and instead be disposed of.

“This will be a lesson for motorbike users. This is because several mat rempits are not worried when their vehicles get seized as they know the seized items will be returned.”

He assured that the officials will continue to enforce illegal street racing as well as finding new methods to curb the issue.
