Honda Prelude concept to make southeast asia debut at KLIMS 2024
Honda Malaysia (HMSB) has confirmed that the highly anticipated Honda Prelude Concept will be showcased at the 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), taking place from December 5 to 11 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). This marks the first appearance of the hybrid coupe in Southeast Asia following its global debut at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.
A Return of an Iconic Nameplate
The Honda Prelude nameplate, synonymous with sportiness and driving pleasure, is making a much-anticipated comeback after more than two decades since the 5th-generation Prelude ceased production in 2001. Fans of the brand are excited about this revival, as the Prelude Concept’s near-production look hints at the possibility of it hitting showrooms in the near future, with reports suggesting a potential launch as early as 2025.
The Honda Prelude Concept at KLIMS is an important milestone, as it strengthens the likelihood of the model being introduced in the region. It marks the beginning of a new era for Honda’s coupe offerings in Malaysia and beyond.
Striking Design: Futuristic Look, Familiar Feel
One of the standout features of the Honda Prelude Concept is its eye-catching design, which blends modern aesthetics with a nod to its performance heritage. The sharp, aggressive front end is complemented by sleek headlights, a modern front grille, and a flowing glasshouse. At the rear, the full-width taillights enhance its bold, futuristic appeal.
Although Honda has not yet revealed full technical details, the Prelude Concept is expected to be powered by an upgraded version of the brand’s e:HEV hybrid powertrain. This hybrid system, already seen in models like the City, HR-V, CR-V, and Civic, combines an electric motor for primary propulsion with a petrol engine that serves as both a generator and direct drive source, using a single-speed transmission.
While a manual transmission is unlikely, given the hybrid powertrain, there are speculations that a non-hybrid version could be offered in the future, potentially catering to driving enthusiasts seeking a more traditional setup.
The Return of Honda’s Affordable Coupe
The Honda Prelude Concept represents the revival of an affordable sporty coupe in Honda’s lineup, a segment that has been lacking since the discontinuation of the CR-Z in 2016. This new Prelude model is expected to offer an accessible, fun-to-drive coupe experience for those seeking a balance between sportiness and practicality. The S660 kei coupe was avaliable, but only in Japan.
In addition to the Prelude Concept, Honda Malaysia may have another surprise in store for KLIMS attendees, potentially unveiling a facelifted Honda Civic. This aligns with the company’s earlier announcement to introduce two new models this year, with one of them still yet to be revealed.
The Honda Prelude Concept at the 2024 KLIMS is set to be one of the most exciting showcases at the event. With its striking design and hybrid powertrain, it signals the return of a beloved nameplate and paves the way for Honda’s next-generation coupe, likely to launch in 2025. This new model could become a key contender in the sporty coupe segment, offering an affordable and thrilling driving experience for enthusiasts in Malaysia and beyond.
