Cracked windshield? Here’s how to fix it before it shatters
A cracked windshield is more than just an eyesore—it’s a safety hazard. Ignoring it can lead to the crack spreading, turning a minor inconvenience into a costly replacement. Fortunately, there are ways to fix a cracked windshield yourself or decide when it’s time to call in the professionals. Here's how you can take action before that small crack becomes a big problem.
1. Assess the Damage
Before diving into repairs, it’s crucial to determine the severity of the crack. If the crack is longer than a few inches, involves multiple cracks, or is located directly in the driver’s line of sight, it might be time to consider a replacement. But for smaller cracks, a DIY repair kit can do the trick.
2. Get a Windshield Repair Kit
Windshield repair kits are easily available at automotive stores or online. These kits usually contain resin, an applicator, and curing strips. The resin is designed to fill the crack and bond the glass, preventing further spread.
3. Clean the Area
Ensure the area around the crack is clean. Dirt and debris can interfere with the bonding process, so use a glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth to clean the area thoroughly.
4. Apply the Resin
Follow the instructions provided with your repair kit. Generally, you’ll apply the resin directly into the crack using the applicator. Make sure to apply evenly and avoid air bubbles. Once applied, use the curing strips to hold the resin in place as it hardens.
5. Cure the Resin
Most repair kits will instruct you to allow the resin to cure in direct sunlight or using a UV lamp. This process usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the resin and light conditions.
6. Check Your Work
After curing, inspect the crack. If it’s still visible but doesn’t appear to be spreading, the repair was likely successful. However, if the crack is still growing, it’s time to visit a professional.
7. When to Seek Professional Help
DIY repairs are a temporary fix. If the crack is deep, wide, or in a sensitive area, it’s best to consult a professional. Don’t let the crack jeopardize your safety—get it fixed before it’s too late.
