The Department of Environment (DOE) Malaysia has introduced amendments to the Environmental Quality Act, targeting vehicles with noisy exhaust systems and those emitting excessive smoke. These changes aim to reduce air and noise pollution, ensuring a cleaner and quieter environment for all.

Under the new regulations, vehicles with excessively noisy exhaust systems will face fines of up to RM10,000. This significant increase from the previous maximum fine of RM2,000 underscores the government's commitment to tackling noise pollution, which has been a growing concern in urban areas.

Similarly, vehicles emitting visible smoke will also be subject to higher penalties. The revised act imposes fines of up to RM15,000 for first-time offenders. Repeat offenders could face even steeper penalties, with fines reaching RM30,000 and the possibility of imprisonment for severe cases. This amendment reflects the seriousness of air pollution issues and aims to deter drivers from neglecting vehicle maintenance.

The DOE has also enhanced its enforcement measures. Regular roadside inspections will be conducted, and vehicles found in violation of the new standards will be immediately penalized. Additionally, the department plans to deploy advanced monitoring technologies, including noise and smoke detection systems, to identify non-compliant vehicles more efficiently.

Vehicle owners are urged to ensure their vehicles meet the prescribed standards to avoid these hefty fines. Regular maintenance, including exhaust system checks and engine tuning, can help prevent excessive noise and smoke emissions. It's also advisable to stay informed about the latest regulations and compliance requirements to avoid unnecessary penalties.
