Crafted under the guidance of Wolfgang Egger, former chief designer at Audi and Lamborghini, the Sea Lion 07 flaunts a unique five-spoke design inspired by the agile movements of sea lions leaping into the water. Its reveal comes after BYD's teasing campaign in the lead-up to the auto show.

As part of the Ocean series alongside models like the Dolphin hatchback and Seal sedan, the Sea Lion 07 is positioned to set a distinct style within the series and introduce a new subset of EVs. With dimensions measuring 4,830 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, it positions itself as a contender against Tesla's Model Y (length – 4,760 mm, width – 1,921 mm, height – 1,624 mm).

Leveraging BYD's e-platform 3.0, the Sea Lion integrates the 8-in-1 electric powertrain, promising enhancements in range, safety, and performance in lower temperatures. While detailed interior images and technical specifics are pending, reports indicate it will be offered in single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive setups.

In China, the Sea Lion 07 is priced from 200,000 yuan (about RM130k), posing a competitive alternative to Tesla's Model Y, priced at 266,400 yuan (RM173k) in the Chinese market. Considering BYD's Ocean series already includes the Dolphin, there's potential for the Sea Lion 07 to enter the Malaysian market, where the Model Y is available starting at RM199k.

BYD has been experiencing significant success in the EV market, selling over 165,500 fully electric vehicles in October alone and crossing the 1.2 million EVs sold mark for the year. With ambitions to narrow the gap with Tesla, which delivered 435,059 vehicles in the third quarter, BYD came remarkably close, delivering 431,603 EVs. The launch of the Sea Lion 07 underlines BYD's determined aspirations to challenge Tesla's dominance in the electric vehicle market.
