To mark this special year, Honda unveiled the latest iteration of the Civic Type R in September 2022, proudly touting it as the most potent Type R model ever created. This release underscores Honda's unwavering commitment to performance and innovation, setting a new benchmark for what's possible in the world of high-performance sports cars.

This version represents a significant leap forward in terms of technology and performance, drawing inspiration from motorsport to surpass even the stripped-down, lightweight versions of its predecessors.

The exterior design of the new FL5 Civic Type R focuses on unity and simplicity, with clean lines and uncluttered details gracing both the front and rear bumpers. Specific design elements, such as the rear doors and arches, were meticulously crafted for the Type R, not only enhancing aesthetics but also optimizing aerodynamics.

Aerodynamic efficiency is further enhanced by design features like the large lower grille, which efficiently channels airflow to the engine and a subtly vented bonnet that aids in airflow management at the front end.

Additionally, strategic elements such as large aperture vents behind the front wheels and a seamlessly integrated rear diffuser contribute to the car's overall aerodynamic prowess.

The Type R is equipped with specially designed Pilot Sport 4S tires, a collaborative effort between Honda and Michelin. These tires, with a 265/30 profile, are 20 mm wider than their predecessors, while the 19-inch wheels boast a "reverse rim" design that reduces deformation on the inner wheel, improving stability, especially during heavy loads.

This results in a 12.7mm wider rear track and a 25mm wider front track, giving the new model a more commanding presence.

The Civic Type R proudly displays a distinctive rear spoiler that not only enhances downforce but also reduces air resistance due to its rearward angulation. This lower and wider spoiler, reinforced by new aluminum die-cast mounts, not only enhances aerodynamics but also contributes to a sleeker roofline and a more imposing stance.

With enhancements in the turbocharger, air intake flow rate, and exhaust system, the engine now produces a staggering 319PS at 6,500 rpm and a robust 420Nm of torque between 2,600 and 4,000 rpm. This transformation firmly establishes the Type R as one of the most powerful cars in its class.

The Type R comes equipped with a precise 6-speed manual gearbox, which has been improved with a lighter flywheel and a new rev-match mechanism, aiding in cornering stability. High-strength components, including a high-rigidity lever and an improved shift gate layout, enhance gear changes, while a helical-type limited-slip differential effectively transmits power to the road, improving overall performance.

The Type R offers a dynamic driving experience through selectable performance modes that allow drivers to customize the car's behavior to their preferences. These modes cover engine, steering, suspension, and engine sound settings and include pre-set modes like Comfort, Sport, and +R, along with a new 'Individual Mode' for personalized driving experiences.

Inside the cabin, performance and aesthetics are seamlessly combined. Recognizable red seats, carpet, and trim are complemented by a newly designed aluminum shift knob and a serialised Type R plate on the dashboard. The cockpit is designed with performance driving in mind, featuring a new digital instrument cluster with clear visuals, a large tachometer, and a gear position display.

A 9-inch Color Touchscreen, the largest ever in a Type R, offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, emphasizing the integration of technology into the driver-centric cabin. Additional features include a Bose Centrepoint premium sound system designed for the Civic's interior and Qi-compliant wireless charging.

Exclusive to the Type R is the improved Honda LogR Performance Datalogger, which combines the car's onboard computer and sensors with a built-in vehicle app, eliminating the need for a smartphone. This feature aids drivers in monitoring and recording various performance metrics in real time, making it particularly useful on tracks and closed courses.

Thanks to narrower pillars, repositioned side mirrors, and a lower bonnet, the driver enjoys improved comfort and visibility in the new, lighter, body-stabilizing performance seat. These front sports seats provide excellent support and comfort during both track sessions and extended journeys.

The Civic Type R, the most powerful car sold by Honda Malaysia, carries a price tag of RM399,900. In 2023, only 19 units will be available for booking, all in Championship White. The fortunate 19 Type R owners for 2023 will be announced by Honda Malaysia, marking a special year for both the Civic and the Type R, combining history and innovation in one extraordinary vehicle.
