Speed limits on federal roads all over Malaysia have been lowered from 90kph to 80kph during this Chinese New Year period.
History has shown that the number of traffic accidents tends to rise during festive seasons. According to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the move to reduce speed limits by 10kph is the government's effort to reduce the risk of road accidents during the festive period. The speed limit reduction is effective from January 18 till January 27.
Nanta has also mentioned that the Works Ministry will be working with the Transport Ministry as well as several other agencies, namely, the Road Transport Department, Public Works Department, Malaysian Highway Authority, and PLUS Malaysia in this road safety operation.
The Public Works Department has also identified and will monitor 76 'black spots' –areas more prone to accidents– during the operation. The government has invested RM17.2 million so far in repair works for 53 of such 'black spots' on federal roads.
Motorist urges everyone to exercise extra caution on the roads during this busy period. Remember to practice good driving habits and ensure that you drive defensively always!
