Car window tinting is a popular modification in Malaysia, offering benefits such as reduced heat, improved privacy, and a stylish look. However, the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) has strict rules on how much tint is allowed. Understanding these regulations can save you from hefty fines and ensure your vehicle complies with Malaysian law.

What Are the JPJ Tinting Rules?

JPJ regulations specify how dark your car windows can be, with different percentages allowed for the front, rear, and side windows. The Visible Light Transmission (VLT) percentage determines how much light passes through the window. The lower the VLT, the darker the tint.

Here’s a breakdown of JPJ’s current rules:

  • Front Windscreen: Must allow at least 70% of light through (30% tint).
  • Front Side Windows: Must allow at least 50% of light through (50% tint).
  • Rear Windscreen and Rear Side Windows: No limit; you can have 100% tint.

Exceptions for Medical and Security Reasons

If you have a medical condition that requires darker tinting or security concerns, you can apply for an exemption from JPJ. Medical exemptions include conditions that are aggravated by exposure to sunlight, such as lupus or skin cancer. To apply, you'll need medical documentation and must follow JPJ’s application process. Security exemptions are usually granted to individuals in high-risk jobs like government officials or VIPs.

What Are the Penalties for Non-Compliance?

Failing to adhere to JPJ’s tinted window regulations can result in fines. Here’s what you’re looking at if you break the rules:

  • First Offence: A fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months.
  • Subsequent Offences: A fine of up to RM4,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months.

In addition, JPJ officers may require you to remove the illegal tint on the spot or within a specified timeframe.

Avoid Fines and Stay Compliant

It’s essential to ensure that your car complies with JPJ’s tinting regulations. Regularly check your window tints, especially if you’re buying a used car with pre-installed tints. Avoid unnecessary penalties by staying within the legal limits or applying for the proper exemptions if needed.
